Do Shiites Perform Friday Prayers?

11:46 - 2018/06/02

Although a few Shia jurists have been of the view that Friday prayer is forbidden during the Occultation of Twelve-Imam, the majority of jurists have believed that Shiites are allowed to perform the prayer or noon prayer at the noon on Fridays.

Do Shiites perform Friday prayers?

In Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Pakistan the prayer is performed. Many Shiites attend to the prayer every week and listen to the Imams’ sermons. Imams share up-to-date and important political, economic and moral issues with people, make them aware of the local and international situations in which they live and give some solutions for them. Most of the Imami jurists (Faqihs) have been and are of the view that during the occultation of Twelve Imam Friday Prayer is not a Wajib-e Tayini (irreplaceable or non-disjunctive obligation) rather it is a Wajib-e Takhyiri (replaceable or disjunctive obligation). [1] It means that one has the option to practice either the Friday Prayer or Noon Prayer at noon on Fridays. A few Shiite jurists have been and are of the view that practicing Friday Prayer is forbidden during the Occultation. They have argued that the one who leads the prayer must be just and the Twelve-Imam is the only Just Imam on the earth. Therefore, when he is not present among us we are not allowed to perform such a prayer. [2]
