The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

22:42 - 2021/11/25

Islam does not allow injustice to others especially women. If man is not kind to his wife, he will suffer the pressure of the Grave.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

October 25 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Though many may think that absolute equality in the interest of women, it is not! Can it be said that based on equality, women should also be demanded to do tough jobs and perform works that need a lot of physical strength. Women have a tender soul and body and it would be injustice to them to demand them struggle on par and do the same jobs that men do.

Being physically the weaker gender, which is by no means a diminution of their ability to achieve perfection and closeness to God, from time immemorial men have been the bullying gender. God knows how many women have suffered at the hands of men. Islam gave an unprecedented status to women. At a time when women were not given importance and among the Arabs of the time there were cases of burying the girl child alive, Islam strongly criticized this culture and threatened the perpetrators of this huge crime saying,

When the buried girl is asked, for what offence she has been killed. (81:8-9)

At a time when women had no say regarding their property the Quran said,

To men belongs a share of what they have earned, and to women a share of what they have earned. (4:32)

And in an era when women were deprived of inheritance, Islam established for them the right to inheritance saying,

To the men a share of what parents and kinsmen leave, and to the women a share of what parents and kinsmen leave, whether it be little or much a share apportioned. (4:7)

Today, some may say that Islam does not consider women equal to men. Truth is, in terms of ability to perfection, there is no difference between men and women and this has been explicitly mentioned in the Quran where it says,

Anyone who performs honorable deeds, whether it is a man or a woman, provided he is a believer, those will enter the Garden and not be harmed a speck. (4:124)

If Islam considers some differences in ruling for men and women, that is because of their natural differences and the different roles they play in the society and in the family.

Aside from the differences, the Quran advises men to treat women fairly,

And You should treat women honourably. (4:19)

In fact, if one does not treat his wife and family kindly, he will suffer the pressure of the grave. It is famously narrated about Sa’d ibn Muadh, a great companion of the Prophet (pbuh&hf) who had become injured in the battlefield and died because of it, but he suffered the pressure of the grave because he did not treat his family kindly.
