Three Lessons About Family Life From Lady Fatima's Lifestyle

11:00 - 2021/12/22

Savior of the world, Imam Mahdi introduces his grandmother, Lady Fatima as his role model and acknowledges that there is an excellent pattern for him in Lady Fatima's lifestyle.(1) Here, I would like to name three teachings that one can learn from Lady Fatima's lifestyle.

Three Family Teachings From Lady Fatima's Lifestyle

Contentment and gratefulness
One of the main problems of today's societies is the absence of significance of contentment in people's mindset. People usually tend to be extravagant with their life expenses and emulate other people's lavish lifestyle. This trend has caused a lot of suffering in different communities. Good management of the house which is done by housewives is very crucial in preventing these troubles. Women are capable of protecting their families against detrimental habits. One day, Salman, the great and close companion of the Prophet saw Lady Fatima in a worn out garment and could not conceal his bafflement. Then, Lady Fatima went to his father and explained the way Salman got surprised at her worn out garment in the following words,

O messenger of Allah, Salman got surprised at my simple clothes. By God who appointed you as his prophet, it has been five years that our bed is a sheepskin on which we pour our camel fodder during the day and our pillow is made out of palm tree. (2)

One day, the messenger of Allah went to his daughter's house and saw her sitting on the ground feeding her children with one hand and grinding some flour with the other hand. The Prophet got impressed and his tears started flowing. He said,

O my daughter, overcome the difficulties of this world by remembering the bounties of the hereafter. (3)

Helping with the household chores
It is important that everyone in a family does his or her share of work. Regarding Lady Fatima and Imam Ali's cooporation in household chores, Imam Sadiq (as) is quoted to have said,

Imam Ali brought firewood for the house, provided water, swept the house, helped clean lentils, and Fatima ground wheat and barley, made dough, and baked bread. (4)

Kindness and affection
It is the power of kindness that makes the family strong against difficulties. When those who assaulted Lady Fatima's house and intended to set it on fire later came to offer a superficial apology; at first, she refused to give them permission, but when they asked Imam Ali (as) to bring up their request before Lady Fatima, she did not decline Imam Ali's request and said,

This is your house and I am your (obedient) wife. Do what you think is right. (5)
