Lady Fatima's Status According to Surah al-Kawthar

11:22 - 2021/12/25

One of the stereotypes of the age of ignorance was the great deal of importance that they merely gave to male children. They thought that only sons could keep their name and dignity for generations. Based on this culture, they sneered at the Prophet for not having male children. The holy Quran disappointed the pagans.

Lady Fatima's Position in Surah al Kawthar

Contrary to the teachings of divine religions, Arabic culture paid a great deal of importance to male children. Arabs regarded sons as continuation of their ancestor's fame and name. sons kept their father's name and girls brought them shame. This stereotype was so commonplace that Harun al-Rashid, the Abbasid caliph, asked Imam Musa al-Kazim why the children of Imam Ali (as) referred to themselves as 'Children of the Messenger of Allah' while the Noble Prophet had no sons.

In fact, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh&hf) is said to have had two sons from his first wife Khadijah, one named Qasim and the other named Tahir who was also called Abdullah. Both of the Prophet's male children passed away in their early childhood or infancy. The enemy seized the opportunity and sneered at the Prophet by calling him 'Abtar'. Abtar was a derogatory nickname that 'As ibn Wa'il, one of the chiefs of the pagans, first used for the Prophet (pbuh&hf). The pagans in Mecca were happy that there would be no offspring for the Prophet (pbuh&hf) to continue his Prophetic mission.

As in other eventful moments and stirring incidents, Allah did not leave his Prophet alone. To offer sympathy to the Prophet, the chapter of Kawthar was revealed to him and used 'Abtar' for his enemy. The holy Quran disappointed pagans and ensured followers of the Prophet (pbuh&hf) that spreading of Islam would continue forever.

Kawthar literally means 'goodness in abundance'. According to scholars it has a board, inclusive meaning but as it was said earlier, the verse was revealed as a response to pagans who referred to the Prophet (pbuh&hf) as 'Abtar'. Accordingly, one clear example of abundant goodness is Lady Fatimah (as). As we see today, the progeny of Apostle of Allah has spread around the world through children of Lady Fatimah (as) and a large number of people in Iran, Iraq, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and other parts of the world are descendants of the Prophet (pbuh&hf), and the questions is where are the progeny of 'As ibn Wa'il and his companions? As the holy Quran said,

Surely your enemy is the one who will be without offspring. (108:3)
