Ghadir narration in Sehah books of Sunnis (part 1)

09:28 - 2022/06/28

The prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H.) returned from Hajjat-ul-Weda’ (farewell Hajj) and reached Ghadir Khum (a specific place). He ordered everyone to stop, then he said: Soon I will obey the invitation of God (=I will pass away). Surely I leave two precious things to you, one is greater than the other: the book of God and my Etrah, that is, my family (progeny). In the following he said: “Whoever I am his/her Mola, then he (Ali) is his/her Mola. O my Lord! Love the one who loves him, and consider as an enemy the one who knows him an enemy”. This narration (called Ghadir narration) has been mentioned in the six authentic (according to the viewpoint of Sunnis) books (called “six Sehah” (plural of Sahih)) of Sunnis, as well as Shia valid books. Although these six Sehah books don’t include Ghadir narration entirely, they include some sentences concerning Wilayat and Imamate of Imam Ali (P.B.U.H.). Based on the viewpoint of Sunni scholars, Ghadir narration is valid and undeniable, in addition to Shia’s point of view.

Ghadir's narration in Sehah books of Sunnis (part 1)

Nasa’i –one of the Sunni scholars and the author of the book Sunan-e-Nasa’i which is one of the six Sehah (plural of Sahih) books (Sehah-e-Settah) of Sunnis- has stated in the book al-Sunan-ul-Kobra Ghadir narration as the following:

The prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H.) returned from Hajjat-ul-Weda’ (farewell Hajj) and reached Ghadir-e-Khum (a specific place). He ordered everyone to stop, then he said: Soon I will obey the invitation of God (=I will pass away). Surely I leave two precious things to you, one is greater than the other: the book of God and my Etrah, that is, my family (progeny).

Then he said: "Then observe how you treat these two. Surely these two do not separate from each other until they will enter Kosar Hawz (pond) to me."

And then he said: "Allah is my Mola (superior) and I am the Mola of all Mo’mens (believers)", then he took Ali’s hand and said: "Whoever I am his/her Mola, then he (Ali) is his/her Mola. O my Lord! Love the one who loves him, and consider as an enemy the one who knows him an enemy".[1]

Ghadir narration in Sehah books of Sunnis

Ghadir's narration which in fact, was the long sermon of the Holy Prophet in Ghadir-e-Khum, has not been mentioned in detail in the six books of Sehah. But the sentences that are about the guardianship and Imamate of Imam Ali (P.B.U.H.) have been quoted in these books and it can be said that the Sehah books have pointed out the origin of the narration, but they have not mentioned all of the sermons. Based on the point of view of Sunni scholars, this narration is among the valid and undeniable narrations. For instance, some of the cases are mentioned in the following:

1- Ahmad Maghrebi (one of the Sunni scholars) writes:

Ghadir narration is correct, proven, Mutawater (successive. Narrated by many) and quoted by more than 100 ways and many people have written this narration individually. [2]

2- Ibn-e-Asem (another Sunni scholar) wrote:

The narration of “Whoever I am his/her Mola, then Ali is his/her Mola” is extremely correct that a crowd of people have quoted it through various ways and all of these are by correct series of evidences. [3]

3- Iskafi (another Sunni scholar) has claimed that Ghadir's narration is a Mutawater (successive) narration among all Muslims. [4]
