Imam Baqir (AS) and the problem of Ghalis

12:34 - 2024/01/14

The Prophet (PBUH) said to one of his Companions named Jabir Ibn Abdullah Ansari: "You will see a man from my family whose name is my name, his behavior and actions are my behavior and actions, and he penetrates knowledge to its depths."

 Imam Baqir (AS)

Imam Baqir (AS) and the problem of Ghalis

One of the issues that arose during the Imamate of Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) and his Shiites, was the "Ghali[1] problem" which had increased in number at that time. By abusing Imam's narrations and attributing fake hadiths to him, they tried to gain the dignity of Imams and Shias and achieve their goals by dragging naive Shias to follow them. When the Imam was in Medina, these opportunism became more and more intense. When the Imam rejected them, his companions also expelled the Ghlis from their group. "Mughira bin Saeed" and "Bayan bin Samaan", both of whom were the most famous figures of the Ghalis and one of their leaders, were excommunicated by the companions of Imam Baqir (peace be upon him). "Abu Hurirah Ajli" wrote a poem about this, the content of which is as follows: "O Abu Jafar! You are an Imam that we love and whatever you are satisfied with, we are satisfied with it and we follow it. Some people come to us and attribute hadiths to you that we are disheartened to hear, hadiths that are narrated by others from you, and the worst things are heresies".[2] Hadiths were false through Imams to attract Iraqi Shiites. By appealing to the obedience of the Imam (peace be upon him), they exempted themselves from performing their Islamic duties and considered the knowledge of the Imam (peace be upon him) and knowing him, is sufficient for their prosperity and achieving the Islamic goals. In contrast, Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) repeatedly emphasized the need to rely on righteous deeds.[3]
