-According to Sunni thought, the caliphate of Yazid was not based on any basis of the legitimacy of Sunnis, Yazid’s father, Mu'awiya, even unlike the previous Caliphs of the Sunnis, forcibly pledged allegiance to Yazid during his lifetime.

Wahhabism’s Critiques:

A Brief Answer to Wahhabism’s Critiques of the Ashura Uprising:

  1. Wahhabists say that Yazid was the legitimate caliph of Islam and that any uprising against him was not true and legitimate.

First: Yazid was not a legitimate caliph and he had usurped the right of Imam Hussein like his predecessors. According to the hadiths of authentic Sunni books, the caliphs of the Prophet (s) are 12 persons, of whom caliphate and wilayat of Imam Ali (a.s) as the first caliph of the Prophet has been mentioned in authentic Sunni books[1][2], in the Shi'a sources, the legitimate caliphs of the Prophet (s) have explained in detail that the first of them is Imam Ali (a.s), after him Imam Hasan (a.s) and after him, Imam Husayn(a.s) is the third caliph of the Prophet (s), and after him 9 of his children are named and introduced by the Prophet of Islam (s.a).[3][4] therefore, uprising was the legitimate right of Imam Hussain (a.s) against Yazid.

Second: According to Sunni thought, the caliphate of Yazid was not based on any basis of the legitimacy of Sunnis, Yazid’s father, Mu'awiya, even unlike the previous Caliphs of the Sunnis, forcibly pledged allegiance to Yazid during his lifetime. [5]

  1. They say Yazid was not involved in the martyrdom of Imam Hossein (a.s).

This claim is contrary to the historical and irrefutable evidence. Yazid ordered his governor in Medina to “pledge allegiance to Husayn b. 'Ali (a.s) and 'Abd Allah b. Zubayr, if they do not accept, behead them and send their heads to me”. Evidence of the killing and captivity of the Ahl Al-Bait (a.s), their journey as captives to Kufa and Levant City, the insult of Yazid to the Sacred Head of Imam Hussain (a.s), stabbing on the lips and teeth of the sacred head of Imam, the poems he has read about his victory … are all evidences that Yazid had involvement in the Martyrdom of Imam Hussain (a.s), the evidences are so clear that does not leave any place of denial.[6]

  1. They say that Imam Husayn (a.s.) was not allowed to take power and caliphate at all, and that he should not rise up, and according to his grandfather's hadith, "two caliphs do not fit in the same climate and if the second caliph claimed, kill him”, therefore, Hussain (a.s) was killed base of the Hadith of his grandfather, so his blood was wasted.

First: This is not a valid hadith, because it is contrary to the Qur'an, the hadiths and traditions of the Prophet (s). In the Qur'an, Allah has rewarded the Prophet (s) with love and obedience to his Ahl Al-Bayt (a.s).[7] There are hadiths in Shi'a and Sunni books that the Prophet (s) has introduced the Qur'an and his Ahl Al-Bayt as his heirs and memorials.[8] There is a clear hadith about Imam Husayn (a.s.) that the Prophet (S) said: "Husayn is from me, and I am from Husayn, the enemy of Husayn is my enemy and my enemy is the enemy of Allah."[9]

Second: At the top of the goals of Imam Hussein (a.s.) was the aim of reviving Islamic values and saving the basis of Islam which was being destroyed by the Umayyad Dynasty. If the Imam had not risen, Islam would not exist anymore, as it is mentioned in his own word to Marwan ibn Hakam, the Umayyad ruler in Medina.[10]

The above was a brief critique to Wahhabism's rants about the exoneration of Yazid and their blaming of Imam Husayn (a.s.) and since this article does not have the capacity to explain further, we refer the readers to more sources and references in this regard.
