Quran and the Places for the Moon - 1

16:46 - 2024/03/11

Science has proven that the moon is always moving in a certain direction and does not stop anywhere. What does the Qur'an mean by the many places of the moon in verse 39 of Surah Yasin?!

Short answer:

The verse that comes after this verse says that the sun and the moon move continuously and regularly. Therefore, the interpretation of the word "Manzel"[1] for the moon does not mean "a place" for "stopping". The term "Manazel"[2] here means "time position" in the orbit of the moon, where humans see the moon in that time position with a specific size and shape. As the moon can be seen for a certain amount in 28 days out of 30 days, until it becomes a narrow crescent and looks like an old branch of a palm tree. For two days, the moon goes to the equinox state and cannot be seen. When the days of the month are 29 days, these positions become 27.

Detailed answer:

In verse 39 of Surah Yasin, we read: “As for the moon, We have ordained its Manazel/phases, until it becomes like an old palm leaf”.[3]

In this verse, God has listed "Manazel/Places" for the moon, which when the moon travels a path, it reaches these places. After traveling these places, it finally takes the form of an arc. But what has been proven by science is that the moon is constantly moving in a certain direction and never stops to have a place!. Based on this, it is thought that what is mentioned in the Qur'an contradicts today's science!

Such an idea is not correct. Because the next verse (verse 40 of Surah Yasin) attributes continuous and orderly movement to the sun and the moon: “Neither does the sun reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day. and each one floats on its own path”.[4],[5]
