It is a brief outline of the wrong defense of Ahl al-Bayt in accordance with the Shiite teachings and doctrines.

What is the wrong defense of Shia and Ahl al-Bayt?

The Shiite Islam's principles and beliefs are totally rational and intellectual, but due to the extreme love and fondness for the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) some of the extremist Shias exaggerates the status of the Imams ascribing some divine attributes to them. Not only nowadays, but also in the early centuries of Islam some of the pseudo followers of the Imams did the same overrating the positions and qualities of the Imams to defend the Shiite teachings and doctrines. But it was categorically wrong defense of Islam and Ahl al-Bayt as the Imams (A), themselves, denounced it and cursed these people for exaggerating their status.

Since the Umayyad government expressed severe animosity toward Shiite Imams especially Imam Ali (AS) commanding their people to curs Imam's dependents, some followers of Imams took extremist action defending Imams but wrongful. Because, the extremist Shias defense of the Ahl al-Bayt (A) created mischief in a religion, which was the emergence of exaggerators (Ghulat). The existence of such an extremist group caused lots of problems for the Imams, one of which was the false accusation disbelief and polytheism Against Imams and Shias. That is why, the Imams cursed and condemned all these exaggerators and sometimes ordered their followers to kill the exaggerators. As an example, Imam Hadi's (AS) ordered Faris bin Hatam to be killed and he guaranteed a place for the killer in heaven 11].

In conclusion, a true Muslim, especially the Shia Muslims loves the Prophet's Ahl al-Bayt, but they must be really careful of committing mistakes ascribing some wrong attributes to the Prophet (P) and his Family members. According to the Shiite teachings, all the three types of Ghulu and exaggeration, including Ghulu in the position and state of godhood, Ghulu in the position of prophethood or prophecy, and Ghulu in any trait or attributes connected with God’s attributes and actions are tantamount to infidelity (Kufr). Hence, a Shia Muslim must not do or say anything that amount to disbelief or polytheism, such as  ascribing divine characteristics to the Prophet or Imams (A).
