Who was the Sacrifice, Isaac or Ishmael?

11:53 - 2017/08/30

The account of the Bible and the Qur’an regarding sacrifice of Abraham’s son are significantly different in both the name of the son and the course of the event.

Ishmael is the real sacrifice

The Bible suggests that the sacrifice was Isaac [1] while the Qur’an does not name who was the son that became the sacrifice: “When he had become old enough to partake of his father’s endeavors, Abraham said, “O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I sacrifice you. So consider, what do you see?” He replied, “O my father! Do as you are commanded. You will find me, God willing, among those who are patient.”[2] All Shia and some distinguished Sunni commentators such as al-Razi and Ibn Kathir refuse the attribution to Isaac and believe that such an attribution derived from a corruption of the Bible. They believe that based on the 19:54-55 it was Ishmael who fulfilled his promise to allow himself to be sacrificed. “And remember Ishmael in the Book. Verily he was true to the promise, and he was a messenger, a prophet. He used to bid his people to prayer and almsgiving, and he was pleasing unto his Lord.”[3] Moreover, according to the biblical account the son was a passive participant during sacrifice performance, unaware of the Divine Command and he asks his father: where is the lamb for burnt offering? This design is incredible! You certainly know how to keep a reader amused.

Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost...HaHa!) Fantastic job.

I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it.

Too cool!

I am extremely impressed with your writing skills as well

as with the layout on your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you

modify it yourself? Either way keep up the nice quality writing, it is rare to see

a nice blog like this one today.
