Advantages of freedom of the press

14:37 - 2016/05/05

The third day of May named as "World Press Freedom Day" is dedicated to World Press Freedom, to remember celebrate and emphasize the importance of press freedom.

Generally what is the press release day and especially what are the press release and its goals?
A) What is the press release day?

World Press Freedom Day first was organized by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 in an effort to reflect upon press freedom in the world [2] Over 100 national celebrations take place each year to commemorate this Day. UNESCO leads the worldwide celebration by identifying the global thematic and organizing the main event in different parts of world every year.
B) What is the press release?
A press release is a short, compelling news story written by public relations professional and sent to targeted members of the media. In other word a press release is a "brief, printed statements that outline the major facts of news story in journalistic style."[3] In fact a press release should read like a news story, written in third-person, citing quotes and sources and containing standard press release information. The press release should contain all the essential information (who? what? where? when? how? and most importantly why?) for the journalist to easily produce his own story.
What are the advantages of freedom of the press?
There are a lot of advantages for freedom of the press. I just mention some of them:
1)Press Freedom and Governance
Ensuring freedom for the media around the world is a priority. Independent, free and pluralistic media are central to good governance in democracies that are young and old. Free media:
a) can ensure transparency, accountability and the rule of law;
b)promote participation in public and political discourse, and
c) contribute to the fight against poverty.
An independent media sector draws its power from the community it serves and in return empowers that community to be full a partner in the democratic process. Freedom of information and freedom of expression are the founding principles for open and informed debate. New technology will continue to evolve and allow citizens to further shape their media environments as well as access a plurality of sources. The combination of access to information and citizen participation in media can only contribute to an increased sense of ownership and empowerment.[4]
2)Press Freedom and democracy
Press freedom is an opportunity to remind the world of the importance of protecting the fundamental rights of freedom of expression and freedom of the press, as stated in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In this article mentioned: "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."[5][1]Without these rights, democracy cannot prevail and development remains unattainable.
3)Press Freedom and poverty
Aid agencies, NGOs (non-governmental organization) and state actors are increasingly recognizing the multi-level impact and the central dynamic of media assistance in fostering sustainable human development and alleviating extreme poverty. Media freedom and access to information play a key role in facilitating local participation and empowerment of the poor. Freedom of expression is furthermore the core human right in a rights based approach to poverty reduction, since it serves as a trigger and catalyst for the realization of all other basic human rights.
However, in order to make freedom of expression a reality, there must be:
a) a legal and regulatory environment that allows for an open and pluralistic media sector to emerge;
b) a political will to support the sector and rule of law to protect it;
c) laws ensuring access to information, especially information in the public domain; and
d)the necessary media literacy skills among news consumers to critically analyze and synthesize the information they receive to use it in their daily lives and to hold the media accountable for its actions.[6]
These elements, along with media professionals adhering to the highest ethical and professional standards designed by practitioners, serve as the fundamental infrastructure on which freedom of expression can prevail. On this basis media serves as a watchdog, civil society engages with authorities and decision-makers, information flows through and between communities.
Conclusion
The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day. There are a lot of advantages for freedom of the press. Some of them include: Improve good governance; strengthening democracy; poverty Reduction. You should pay Attention that “access to Information and Fundamental Freedoms: This Is Your Right!“[6]

The third day of May is named as “World Press Freedom Day”.[1] Every year, May 3rd is dedicated to World Press Freedom, to remember celebrate and emphasize the importance of press freedom, which is crucial for the functioning of a healthy democratic and free society. In the other word, every year, 3 May is a day in which the people celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom and evaluate press freedom around the world defending the media's independency. [MP2D1] There are four questions that must be answered about the freedom of the press. 1) What is a press release and what are its goals? 2) What are the advantages of freedom of the press?
