The Gradual Strategy of Islam for the Elimination of Slavery

Islam adopted a gradual strategy for the elimination of the slavery; because, it was impossible to stop slavery as a very old established system through freeing huge number of slaves at once. Firstly, Islam forbade all the different enslaving ways, such as enslaving free people through hunting and purchasing except for arresting the enemies in the battle fields. Secondly, Islam ordered Muslims neither to kill the arrested enemies, nor to imprison them, and it is clear that they could not be liberated; rather, Muslims had to keep them in their houses providing them with foods, housing, clothing, education, etc. It must be noted that Muslims treated them in a very moral and humane way. Thirdly, Islam changed the attitude of the whole society towards slavery placing restrictions on acquisition of slaves, commencing an active campaign for emancipation of the slaves, restoring dignity to slaves and enhancing their social status.
