The Rationale of Practicing Slavery in Islam (1)

During the recent years the terrorist groups such as ISIS in Iraq and Syria have captured thousands of innocent civilians and treated them brutally as slaves under the name of Islam presenting a misleading and distorted picture of Islam to the world. They have massacred thousands of them, for the past few years, claiming that they represent Islam observing the Islamic rules and teachings.

Their behavior with the poor innocent Muslim and non-Muslim civilians was such oppressive and cruel that no one can tolerate hearing about their stories. The pictures and scenes of the murdered captives are published vastly through western mass media and internet to destroy the real merciful image of Islam. Now a question arise here that what is the reason behind the rules of practicing slavery in Islamic teachings, and why Muslims have captured their enemies in the battle fields treating them as slaves in the past.

When Muslims' enemies were attacking Islamic territories or countries, Islamic states and governments had no other choice except for defending themselves and protecting their Muslim and non-Muslim people against the enemies. After many of the battles, in which Muslims defeated their enemies, thousands of the enemies were captured by the Muslim army and soldiers throughout the Islamic history. The huge number of the arrested soldiers could have not been massacred as terrorists do right now opposing to the Islamic teachings.

The important question is that what is the best solution to this problem, considering the fact, that they are human and even they have the right to live peacefully and the right to be treated respectfully? In the second part of this article the different possible ways are going to be discussed in order to find the best solution which has been put forward according to the Islamic teachings.
