Abdul Azim al-Hasani: A knowledgeable Muslim scholar and narrator

14:12 - 2016/01/13

It is a brief outline of Abdul Azim Al-Hassani, the great disciple and companion of infallible Imams (A) who passed away on Shawwal 15, 252 AH, in Ray and was buried there during the time of Imam al-Hadi (A).

Abdul Azim al-Hasani: A knowledgeable Muslim scholar and narrator

One of the outstanding progeny of the prophet Mohammad (P) and a companion of the three infallible Imams (A), from them he narrated many hadiths, he was a Shiite theologian who had a full knowledge of religious issues and Quran. He was also a popular and trusted follower of the household of the prophet (P) known as Hassani because he descents from his holiness Imam Hassan Mojtaba (A) [1]

Beside the complements and appreciation of some of the infallible Imams, there are plenty of complements and admirations about him in the works of Shiite scholars which show his significant, scientific and trustworthy character. Shiite scholars and narrators called him as a worshipper, ascetic abstemious person, trusty having clear belief, heart and as a great narrator (Mohaddeth). [2] He was a pious man known for his trust-keeping, truthfulness and knowledge in religion; a believer in the Unity of God and Justice of God, and a transmitter of many hadiths."[3]

In some of the narrations from the infallible Imams it is stated that his pilgrimage (Ziarat) is heavenly rewarded as much as Imam Husain (A). For instance, Sheikh al-Saduq has narrated that a man from Rey came to Imam 'Ali al-Naqi (A) and said, "I went to visit Imam al-Husain's (A) holy shrine."[4] Imam (A) told him, "If one visits 'Abd al-'Azim al-Hasani's grave near you, it would be as if he visits Imam al-Husain (A) in Karbala." [5]

Due to the political and social problems for the household of the Prophet Mohammad (P) in Medina, at the time of Abbasid caliphs especially the caliph Motawakil who made very critical conditions for the Ahl al-Bait (A) as well as their followers, Abd al-Azim Hasani traveled to Ray a neighboring city to Tehran.  According to Najashi, "Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid al-Barqi narrated the story as, 'Abd al-'Azim al-Hasani was escaping from the Sultan and came to Rey and stayed in the basement of a Shi'a in the neighborhood of Sikkat al-Mawali. [6]

The great disciple and companion of infallible Imams (A) passed away on Shawwal 15, 252/November 2, 866. [7] Najashi reports that "'Abd al-'Azim al-Hasani became ill and passed away in ray."[8]

Finally, it must be mentioned that now the holy shrine of Hazrat Abdul Azim Hasani along with the sacred tombs of Hazrat Imamzadeh Hamzeh ibn Imam Musa al-Kazim (A) and Imamzadeh Taher ibn Imam Ali ibn Husayn in Ray city is one of the most famous sacred places and tourist attractions in Iran. Millions of the lovers of the Holy Ahlul Bayt (A) from all parts of the world every year visit this holy shrine. [9]
