An Outline of Martyr Baqir al-Ṣadr's political activities

Martyr Ayatullah Muḥammad Bāqir al-Ṣadr (1935-1980) was a Shi'a scholar, thinker, and a political activist in Iraq. Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr as a Muslim scholar and thinker believed that Islam is a political religion that is why Islamic nation must establish an Islamic political system which would govern by the Divine message of Islam and reflect all the enlightening aspects of Islam.

Martyr al-Sadr as one of the most outstanding Islamic political activist came to the conclusion that he must establish a political party on the basis of Islamic thought and ideology in order to organize Islamic campaigns and resistance. After a consultation with many other scholars in Iraq, Shahid al-Sadr established Hizb al-Da'wat al-Islamiyya (the Party of Islamic Invitation) in 1377/1958. [1] Ayatullah al-Sadr set out an agenda for the party based on Islamic values and beliefs. [2]

The political and social activities and thoughts of Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr are very influential in today's Iraq which is evidenced by former Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki position as head of Hizb al-Da'wa and a devout follower of Sadr. From the thoughts and activities of Martyr al-Sadr it can be deduced that the leadership in Islamic political system must be an aware Marjaiyyat – one which is fully aware of the circumstances, hopes and goals of the Muslim community.
