Some Virtues of Imam Hassan (as) According to the Quran

It is good to learn some virtues of Imam Hassan (as) from the Quran, a source about the authenticity of which no Muslim doubts. There are verses in the Quran which, according to Islamic sources, apply to the five Members of the Cloak1 and Imam Hassan (as) was one of the Members of the Cloak. According to these verses, we learn that Imam Hassan (as) was:

1. infallible

According to chapter 33 verse 33, Imam Hassan (as) was an infallible person. This verse, addressing the Ahl al-Bayt (as), says,

Indeed Allah desires to repel all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and purify you with a thorough purification.

Impurity in this verse refers to all kinds of impurity of the soul, and the word (Innama) in the verse indicates that this position is exclusively for the household of the Prophet (pbuh&hf).1

2. a person to whose prayers God would listen

The verse of Mubahala (3:61) indicates that God listened to the prayers of the Ahl al-Bayt (as). This verse says,

Should anyone argue with you concerning him, after the knowledge that has come to you, say, "Come! Let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, our souls and your souls, then let us pray earnestly and call down Allah's curse upon the liars."

When the Najrani Christians saw the family of the Prophet (pbuh&hf), they refrained from Mubahala since they realized that if the Prophet (pbuh&hf) and his family prayed, their prayer would definitely be accepted. According to this verse, Imam Hassan (as) was the son of the Prophet (pbuh&hf) whose prayer would have been accepted had he prayed.2

3. selfless and devoted servant of God

Almost all Shia and Sunni scholars agree that some verses of chapter al-Insan like verses 8 and 9, were exclusively revealed about the household of the Prophet (pbuh&hf) i.e. Imam Ali (as), Fatimah al-Zahra (sa), Imam Hassan (as), and Imam Hussain (as). These verses testify that Imam Hassan (as) was generous, selfless, and sought only God’s pleasure.3
