Detailed answer:

The participation of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) in this council is definitely not a sign of its approval. What emerges from the history and speech of Amir al-Mu'minin Ali (peace be upon him) is his urgency to participate in this council. In explanation it should be said:

First: This way could be a way to achieve the right, and despite the small possibility, it was appropriate for him to participate in this council. Imam (a.s) participated in that council not to confirm the council, but to assert the right and complete the argument.

Second: It is not clear that the Imam's entry into the council of six people was voluntary, because the second caliph's threats against the members of the council indicate a strange and surprising tyranny. When Omar summoned all six people and raised the issue of the caliphate, turned to Muhammad bin Maslamah and said:

“When you return from my burial ceremony, invite these six people with fifty armed men for the cause of caliphate and gather them all in a house. Stop with that armed group at the door of the house. They choose one person from among themselves for the caliphate. If five of them agree and one disagrees, behead him. If four agree and two disagree, kill those two opponents. If these six are divided into two equal groups, that group is right that Abd al-Rahman will be among them. Then invite those three people to agree to this group. If no agreement is reached, eliminate the second group. If three days pass and there is no agreement among the members of the Shura, execute all six people and leave the Muslims free to choose a person for their leadership.

When the people returned from the burial ceremony of Omar, Muhammad bin Muslimah gathered the council members in a house with fifty people swords in their hands and informed them of Omar's order. [1]
