Do the prophets have the knowledge of unseen?

11:54 - 2017/03/08

Referring to the holy Quran it becomes clear that the prophets know some of the unseen things and events; thus, no one can reject totally the possibility of such knowledge for the prophets.

Do the prophets have the knowledge of unseen?

It is an important question that whether the prophets have the knowledge of unseen or not, and it is only Allah (J) who has such knowledge. Referring to the holy Quran, it becomes clear that the prophets know some of the unseen things and events; thus, no one can reject totally the possibility of such knowledge for the prophets.  But the important point is that no one can acquire such knowledge except by Allah's will. Qur’an tells about the knowledge and the intercession of the Prophet Muhammad (P) and his twelve successors that:

"Who can intercede with Him except the cases He permits? He knows what is in front of them (the Prophet and the Imams) and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He will.” [1]

Based on Islamic teachings creation, giving life, curing without medicine, the knowledge of what has happened and what will happen, are prerogatives of Allah (J), but if he wills then the same abilities and powers could be given to the prophets as it is mentioned in the holy Quran regarding Prophet Jesus.

"I have come to you with a sign from your Lord; I will create for you out of clay a figure of a bird, then I will breath into it, and it will be a bird by leave of Allah; I will also heal the blind and the leper, and bring to life the dead, by leave of Allah. I will also inform you of what things you eat and what you treasure up in your houses. Surely, in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.” [2]

In the following verse the Holy Qur'an explicitly says that Almighty Allah (J) bestow the knowledge of unseen to some His prophets.

"He possesses the Ghayb and He does not disclose His Ghayb to anyone except to such a Messenger as He is well-pleased with.” [3]

Nor would Allah reveal to you the unseen. But [instead], Allah chooses of His messengers whom He wills, so believe in Allah and His messengers. [4]

"And he (Muhammad) is not niggardly the Knowledge of the Unseen.” [5]

From the above verses, it is evident that Allah (J) discloses some of the hidden and unseen things or events to the prophets; as a result, Prophet Muhammad (P) and other prophets transfer whatever they receive from Allah (J), through revelation, to the people. Therefore, it is not true to say that knowledge of unseen is not given to the prophets.
