Allah’s Order to the Women to Wear Jalabib 

    The word Jalabib Robes plural of "Jilbab" means a mask that covers the head and neck or a long cloth that covers the whole body, head and neck. In the previous verses, there was a talk about the suffering of the believers at the hands of the hypocrites. This verse says: In order for believing women not to be harassed by lewd people, they should cover themselves in such a way that there is no reason for them to be disrespected.

O Prophet! Tell thy wives and thy daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.[1]

According to this verse, it was a kind of headscarf used by women of that time, but women did not pay attention to covering themselves from non-mahram. Therefore, the command of this verse is to bring jalbab (Robe) closer to oneself, not the principle of jalabib, which has been customary.

     This verse, which commands hijab, is not presented as a threat, but explains the philosophy of hijab as follows: women and girls should cover themselves if they want to be safe from teasing, slander, attacks and threats of unclean and lewd people.

From the messages of the verse about Jalabib

▫️ Let's start with the insiders first, then others.

"..Tell thy wives and thy daughters and the women of the believers.."[2]

▫️ There is no difference between the wives and daughters of the Prophet and other women in the divine decrees.

" wives and thy daughters and the women of the believers "[3]

▫️ It is necessary to wear clothes that represent a woman's personality to ensure chastity and honour.

"..so that they may be recognised..."[4]

▫️ Don't give an excuse to the sick of heart and disturbers of public modesty. (In the previous verses, there was a warning to the tormentors, in this verse, the duty of those who are tormented is raised.)

▫️ There is no obstacle for women to travel outside the house, maintaining public chastity.

"....to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad)…"[5]

▫️ In commanding good and forbidding evil, state your reason for ordering and forbidding.

" That will be better "[6]

 

▫️ The type of clothing of people in the society can represent their personality, school and purpose.

"…may be recognised and not annoyed..."[7]

▫️ The source of many of the harassment of men and women towards women and girls is their own clothes.

" That will be better "[8]

▫️ Women with hijab should maintain the public atmosphere of chastity and chastity their presence on the stage and take the opportunity to manoeuvre from the lustful. "..to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad).

That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed…"[9]

▫️ Bad hijabs of the past can be forgiven.

"forgiving, merciful"[10]

God's forgiveness is accompanied by His mercy.

"May Allah be Forgiving, Merciful"[11]

 

Conclusion

The verse shows how women should dress in society so that they be recognised, respected, and honoured in society to be safe for them. In this verse, Allah is ordering both the wives of the prophet and believing men t tell women to put on the Jalabib. Whoever refuses is annoying Allah. Allah ends with his mercy to those who put the command into action.

[5] The same يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِن جَلَـٰبِيبِهِنّ

[6] The same, ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰٓ أَن يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ ۗ

[7] The same, ٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰٓ أَن يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ

[8] The same, أَن يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ

[9] The same, ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِن جَلَـٰبِيبِهِنَّ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰٓ أَن يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ

[10] Same, غَفُورًۭا رَّحِيمًۭا

[11] Same, وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًۭا رَّحِيمًۭا
