The Importance of Attendance in the Elections

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution explains the impact of people’s presence in the election arena and says:

“The first effect of elections is to prove that the nation is alive, aware and self-conscious. Our nation must practice to prove it by taking advantage of the opportunity of different and successive elections. The second effect of elections is that when the will of the people enters the field of elections, the opinion of the majority of the people will be achieved according to their desires and ideals. Whether in the election of the president, whether in the election of representatives of the Islamic Council, whether in the election of the Assembly of Experts or in the election of councils”.[1]

Sayyed Ali Khamenei referred to freedom in the country, especially freedom of thought and expression, and considered the existence of elections a sign that the Iranian nation enjoys political freedoms and said:

“The Iranian people, within the framework of their law, have the freedom to choose the country’s officials based on their conviction and opinion. If they are satisfied with the performance of the officials, they will continue to choose them. If they are not satisfied, they will change their choice”.[2]

Disadvantages of not participating in elections:

Failure to perform any legal duty by Muslims, in addition to causing divine punishment, will affect them in this world and cause disasters in this worldly life. It is self-evident that if the legitimate duty that people have neglected to fulfill is related to the public destiny and the basic components of human societies, such as elections, then the extent of the damage will become more general and its impact will appear on everyone.
